Just in case you don't actually want the new iTunes Ping sidebar to open up every time you relaunch, or don't want those arrows by each song: you can't disable them within iTunes even if you don't use Ping (bad iTunes!  My trust in Apple continues to decline).  However, you can disable the sidebar (Windows and Mac instructions) and disable the arrows (Mac and Windows) with a couple of command line/terminal prompts.

It'd be one thing if it remembered your prior settings, the way it does most display options. But no, every time! Plus the arrows couldn't be turned off in iTunes at all. Still, the fix wasn't that hard.

I tried the command line and it didn't work for me (though I haven't restarted the computer since then, just the programs), but if you turn off the iTunes store that also turns off Ping in the sidebar, so I've been doing that for now.

Sorry to hear that! Are you using 64-bit Windows? The instructions are slightly different for that. I do use the iTunes Store, so that would be too drastic for me.

I'm using a Mac. 10.5.8, Intel processor. I've seen a couple other Mac people it's not working for either, around the internet. But like I said, I can live with the store off, and turning it on only when I specifically need something.
