I haven't read much by King (one novel, one collection of short stories), but I considered your prediction in light of authors from the nineteenth century who are taught in lit studies today.
Tastes may change, and the visual narratives of film and television mean that popular novelists often don't set the scene in words as much as their predecessors had to, but I can see the line from Poe and Twain to Mr. King.
